Dumpster Diving
Continuing the activity we started on the date we were engaged, instead of hip furniture, this time we dove for a much needed vacuum cleaner. Our immediate neighbors (college students) in duplex land recently moved out and left quite a pile of ‘trash’ on the curb, including a presumed dead vacuum cleaner. After hauling it inside our side of the dupe, I tested it, only to find it didn’t seem to suck, which, well, sucked. The electric motor was fine, and after examining the innards further, I found a small portion of the tube was clogged considerably. After a good cleaning and unclogging, the vacuum, I am proud to say, works like a champ. The little devil.
Time spent: 1 hour
Money spent: $0
Retail price of said vacuum: ~$55

Presuitent to Paragraph 6.5 of Section XII of College Station city code, “dumpster diving is a dangerous, dirty and illegal act.”
Good score. Reminds me of the time that Lewellen scored a half-eaten omelette at IHOP.
The things people leave behind.

You know, I’ve been quietly reading the Super-site from the shadows, but I knew I finally had to chime in on the dumpster (curb?) dive. The first person I thought of was Mr. KidFantastic Lewellen, bringing a bag of bagels to the Christmas gift exchange a few years ago. I thought it was a great idea until I found out where he got them.
Way to go on the vacuum. Our house consists of much the same…we like to call them “conversation pieces.”
AND, congrats on the mini-Super on the way!

I must say, my love for the dumpster/curb find was fueled, if not started, by the king of all dumpster dives, Mr. Lewellen. Richard was so creative; I too remember visits to IHOP that consisted of omelettes, pancakes, eggs, you name it, all free of charge, courtesy of tables of food destined for the dumpster. What a legacy…
I wondered if there were any lurkers on the site. Now I wonder how many more there are, and who they are too. Rebecca, thanks for visiting, we appreciate your support. It looks like you are in Ft. Worth? You know the sman is in Mansfield now, we’ll be visiting this coming weekend.

Hey, we’re open to meet up or have y’all over for dessert after 8pm or so on friday night—we have other obligations the rest of the weekend. I know that’s late notice, but let me know. Of course the sman and his lady are invited, too. We don’t live more than 20 min. or so from Mansfield. (we’re right next to the seminary.) We promise, nothing half-eaten will be offered.
