Contest Winner

April 26th, 2006 by Thomas

After a long wait for snail mail to take it’s course and photos to be taken, the latest Contest Winner is Mr. Greg ‘Gangsta’ Rhodes, of the greater Orlando area. The latest contest featured a well expired DQ coupon on a ‘Malt Shoppe Barbie’. Greg’s guess of G.I. Joe was the closest and he was declared winner on the basis that both were action figures/dolls (serving malts is action, just like killing wounding Dreadnots and/or CobraCon dudes is action too). The toy epoch was the same as well. Below you see Greg enjoying the cool and useful prizes he received - two ‘FingerLights’ and a sweet Robert Plant cassette. The FingerLights come in handy on camping trips when the headlamp fails or late at night for that nightowl reading under the covers. Congratulations Greg! Stay tuned everyone for another contest coming soon…

Greg is the champion, my friends.

TV Turnoff Week

April 24th, 2006 by Thomas

Hey, in honor of TV Turnoff Week, faithful readers should give it a shot. You’ll be suprised how little you need television to be happy, healthy, and wise.

Television

Some quick facts:

  • Hours per year the average American youth spends in school: 900
  • Hours per year the average American youth spends watching TV: 1,023

KAMU & KJRS

April 22nd, 2006 by Thomas

We are not television people. We are radio people.

Looks cool, but not our radio

We listen to our local stations, KAMU and KJRS. KAMU is the local public radio station which carries primarily NPR programs and some excellent local programs (and one not so excellent one). We are supporters of KAMU since it is our primary means of entertainment, besides what we hear on KJRS. What is KJRS you ask? The photo below depicts the special device we need to listen to the KJRS programs.

We feel like chicken tonight, like chicken tonight…

April 21st, 2006 by Thomas

Our menagerie has grown. We are now the owners of 5 little chicks which we are grooming for egg production. Our friends the Franks will be bordering our chicks after the initial 5-6 weeks of brooding in our garage. We have 2 Ameraucana and 3 Production Reds. Our Ameraucana’s are supposed to be ‘Blue Ameraucana’, but we’ll just have to see. Production Reds are a cross between Rhode Island and New Hampshire reds. The Ameraucana’s lay green and blue eggs and the Production Reds lay brown eggs. The Production Red is said to combine the best qualities of both The Rhode Island and the New Hampshire and many regard it as the best of the brown egg layers. Here’s the answer to the question many of you are anxious to ask:

Q: Do these chickens have large talons?

A: No, they do not have large talons.

La Paletera

April 17th, 2006 by Thomas

If you’ve been following the news lately, you’ll have noticed the public ‘debate’ of immigrant rights, legality, etc. Whatever your opinion, mine recently has been focused on the smaller stuff, in particular, one establishment that is a direct result of the increased Latino ‘market’ in the U.S. and Texas in particular. A small San Antonio franchise has a store here that brings a slice of the Mexican culture to us. La Paletera showcases the tasty, cold, and gourmet treats that are, from what attGraham tells me, quite literally, the fruit of a national pasttime in Mexico. If you would like to have the best fruit ice cream bar or cup of fruit you’ve ever had in your life, head on down to La Paletera at the corner of Texas and Southwest Pkwy. Notice in the photo the streams of people lined up outside the door. Oh wait, actually not. The absence of such a line is no indication of the quality of the tasty treats inside, but rather an indication that it is not known about… yet. Therefore, I urge you, go, enjoy, and keep this place in business. I’m eating all I can, but I can only eat so much. Whether you think immigrants from Mexico should stay or go, one thing is for sure, their popsicles should stay.

Weighing in…

We went to the doctor for Josiah’s 2 month check-up and first round of shots. He was a trooper and flirted with the 5 nurses who came in to simultaneously inject him with four shots. He cried and Momma cried, but both were calmed soon after and Josiah has been doing great all afternoon. He weighs 12 lbs. 2 oz. and measures 23.5 inches long. (At birth he was 7 lbs. 2 oz and 19.25 inches–50th percentile for both). He is now in the 75th percentile for both. Way to grow Josiah!
