TV Turnoff Week
Hey, in honor of TV Turnoff Week, faithful readers should give it a shot. You’ll be suprised how little you need television to be happy, healthy, and wise.

Some quick facts:
- Time per day that TV is on in an average US home: 7 hours, 40 minutes
- Percentage of US households with 3 or more TVs (2003): 50
- Time per week that parents spend in meaningful conversation with their children: 38.5 minutes
- Percentage of 4-6 year olds who, when asked, would rather watch TV than spend time with their fathers: 54
- Hours per year the average American youth spends in school: 900
- Hours per year the average American youth spends watching TV: 1,023
oh my ga…those are shocking. Unfortunately, I don’t have the choice to watch t.v. this week–or any other week for that matter. i, vanessa houk, have officially not had t.v. for 7 months (this is how long we’ve been married)…the only times i realize i miss it is when i look at our 10 movie collection and get dissappointed because i think magically there will be something new to entertain me and there isn’t. I also have no idea what lost or house are all about and i’m not sucked into those great mtv reality show marathons anymore….i have survived life w/out laguna beach. Did you guys know there is going to be a vail mtv reality show? my friend fosh tried to put me on the list for an interview, but i never got called. This is how my interview would have gone anyways….I hate skiing, I think the ski/snowboard culture here is ridiculous, I can count on one finger the number of times I’ve been out on Bridge Street (where all the bars are), I’m married and I’m a Christian. That would have pretty much booted me. Well, now that I basically wrote a story on your blog…I’m so dunzo.
Good for you Vanessa & Ross! We are so proud. You know, we read in a certain premarital book that it is recommended not to have a tv your first year of marriage. That’s not why we did it, but we agree that it is wise.
I must confess, we do have a t.v. and I very much enjoy getting new recipe and cooking ideas from the food network every now and then ….and I think our first year and a half of marriage has been wonderful . :) I think moderation and discernment on what we put in our heads has helped it to not get out of hand. but I am not suprised about the typical household. in many homes life revolves around the television.
…a good book is worth more than a good cooking show any day!
Rachel, as one of your “older” friends ( sadly to say that means age), I am commanded, Biblically, to give you younger women wise advice about husbands and children - I really like this - permission to give advice - anyway I digress. No matter what your views are on TV in general, never, ever have one in the master suite. Enough said. Anything else would be TMI.
