New Tricks

June 24th, 2006 by Rachel

Josiah has mastered the roll from his back to his tummy. He does it all of the time now and fusses to be returned to his back, just to roll over again. He also has a new trick of wrinkling up his nose and breathing heavily. He does it most often on the changing table, we think mimicking our scrunched up noses due to diaper smells. He also loves to smack his lips, all of these tricks (except the rolling) can be seen below. Enjoy!

Happy Father’s Day

I love snuggling with Daddy!

I love you Daddy and I am so glad that you are my Daddy. You make me smile and laugh like no one else can. Just getting to see you makes me smile! I love the way that you play with me and make me laugh by bouncing me and flying me through the air–or just even looking at me. I also really like when you give me a bath every night. It is one of my favorite times of the day! I love you so much.

Love,
Josiah

Four Months Update

June 17th, 2006 by Rachel

Josiah is four months old now and such a joy to be around. Last week at his checkup, he weighed a whopping 14 pounds, 12 ounces and is 24.5 inches long. He is learning new things all the time and amazing us with his tricks. He follows us around the room with his eyes and is good at grabbing his toys and soaking them with slobber. He definitely knows who Momma and Daddy are and lights up with a smile when he sees us. He surprised me by rolling over onto his tummy while I was working on laundry, but hasn’t done it again since. His newest trick is putting his foot in his mouth which he spends a good portion of time doing. Josiah has had an eventful month full of traveling, meeting his great-grandparents, attending his first wedding, staying with a babysitter (his Aunt Amanda, see previous post), and taking an ounce from a bottle, but then refusing it altogether. Here are some highlights, more pictures are available here.

Radio killed the video star

June 13th, 2006 by Thomas

This weekend we drove to Austin to see a live broadcast of our favorite radio program, A Prairie Home Companion. Garrison Keillor and company were joined by several excellent artists, including Joe Ely, on the campus of the University of Texas. Pat Donahue educated us on the rich Texas blues heritage, Fred Newman impressed us (again) with his amazing sound effects and guest Molly Ivins told stories of Austin before it became so normal. A Prairie Home is a variety show, similar to, but far surpassing, a show like Saturday Night Live, and including more than just comedy and music. You can listen to the show here. We’ve only met a handful of people who actually know what this show is, and only one who confesses to being a fan (thanks Ross!). We fully expected to be hanging out with the 50 and older crowd at the show, but to our surprise, the audience was quite young like us.

Also, it turns out living here has made us soft-headed when it comes to elevators. We had a couple of mishaps with the parking garage elevator, the first of which almost made us late to the show. (Always remember that the elevator may not actually stop on the floor you specified.)

We had an excellent evening at a hotel close to the show thanks to Travis (and the state of Texas in a round-about way). Josiah had a nice time playing with his Aunt Amanda who came up from San Marcos to bless us. After the show we ventured down Lamar and ate a great meal at the Twin Dragon, appropriately named because it serves both Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine. The Twin Dragon’s two fists of fury were expertly employed to sock us with excellent tastes and our waiter (as so often is the case in a place like this) was a hoot.

Sunday morning we met up with a long list of friends down south at Hope in the City and had a great time fellowshipping and catching up. We even received a cool coffee mug to boot, thanks HITC!

We passed through Bastrop for lunch with Travis, Debbie, Amy, and Amanda. I was pleased to bring back home the resurrected gas edger that Travis fixed up. I promptly put it to work on our yard and I must say, the edges look great. The stuff in the middle looks not so.

Bubba Got Hitched

Rachel and Jason as Kids

Congratulations to my little brother Jason and his new wife Megan. They were married last weekend in a sweet ceremony in McKinney and they are currently living it up in Jamaica. Its crazy to see my little brother all grown up, but we are so excited for him and glad to have Megan as a part of our family. One of the highlights of the day was seeing Megan, a 3rd grade teacher, getting jiggy with all of her students. They obviously think she’s the coolest, most beautiful teacher ever. Josiah was a trooper and stayed up way past his bedtime and managed not to freak out. He also got to meet his great-grandparents for the first time, and he turned into a giggle box with his Gigi-ma (that’s a shortened version of great-grandma). And yes it is me in the photo being sassy with Jason, the scruffiest little boy I have known.
