And you thought it was hot outside

My future's so bright, I gotta wear shades.

Our friend Elizabeth came to town for a visit last week. She’s touring the states as she prepares to head back to Dubai where it’s so hot that the swimming pools are equipped with chillers.

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s… SUPER BABY!

Chacos, Anyone?

July 18th, 2006 by Rachel
The Chaco

Thomas and I both really enjoy our Chacos, especially this time of year. They are an excellent, durable sandal, one that we’ve each worn almost daily for the past 3+ summers. However, Chacos have a problem with “organic matter” mixing with dirt causing quite the stench. For those of you Chaco-wearers, what do you use to clean your Chacos to prevent the smell from quickly resurfacing?

Last summer, I used laundry detergent and a scrub brush (or old toothbrush) to scrub them and then washed them in the washer. This summer, I tried making a baking soda paste to scrub, washing them in the washing machine and then setting them in the sun for a few hours. Still, the smell returns within a week (more quickly on Thomas’ sandals than mine). I’d love to hear what works for you, so comment away!

5 Month Update (a little late)

July 16th, 2006 by Rachel

Josiah is five months and 10 days old. Time goes by so quickly! We are enjoying our little boy so much. He is interacting with us more and more everyday and starting to play. His favorite game is peek-a-boo, which shows how much a child picks up through repetition, also known as training. Starting when he was a few weeks old, we would play peek-a-boo, or as we call it, “where’s Josiah? There he is!” Just cover his face with a burp cloth and let the fun begin. A few weeks ago, he started initiating play by picking up any piece of fabric nearby (his own clothes included) and covering his face and waiting a few “where’s Josiah”s to pick it up off it. When we say, “There he is!” he giggles and covers his face again. Isn’t he so smart?

Josiah is quite the mover and shaker. No crawling, but he can get all over his crib and his play area in no time. He can go around in a circle while on his back/stomach and roll all over the place. He’s surprisingly able to reach toys if we let him fuss for a minute. I’m apprehensive about the whole crawling thing–I’m sure he’ll be into everything soon enough. Josiah is really into faces these days and grabs ours if we let him get close enough. He is also in love with his reflection in the mirror and tries to make out with it if he can get his face against it.

This month has been a month of many firsts, or I guess the past week has been. He had his first solids (homemade rice cereal) and went to the pool for the first time. I think the sun was just too bright for his baby eyes, even though we shaded him as much as possible. I think we need to follow Helene’s lead and get some baby sunglasses.

I can fold in half! I am trying to learn to sit, but I am just too flexible.
