Tante Bethany came to play! Doesn’t she look like a model? She’s making her tour across Texas now that she is home from Paris. I enjoyed having a friend around to share some sweet “girl talk” and Josiah loved all of the attention. We love you Bethany!

Diaper Rainbow

Check out the line Thomas rigged up for me in our laundry room. Now, every time I hang them up to dry, I have to put them in rainbow order.

Thanksgiving

November 26th, 2006 by Rachel

My mom recently moved to a new house in a new town (Athens) so we went to see her. Thankfully, my brothers, sisters-in-law, and sister all made it to the same place for the first time since my younger brother’s wedding six months ago.

Josiah enjoyed all the attention he received from his Nana and everyone else around. Here he is with his Aunt Amanda and her new haircut.

On Friday, after all of the other relatives were gone but us, we explored a small corner of Athens with my mom and Woody. Athens is home to the Texas Wildlife Fishery Museum, and we went there. Yes, it is a real place with more information than you ever wanted to know about fresh-water fishing in Texas. There is even a real hatchery there.

We saw some really huge catfish, some bigger than Josiah. Here is a wall of them. You can buy fish food for a quarter in a candy dispenser and feed it to the fish. They know the drill.

There were three alligators there also. Josiah was a bit uneasy about those guys.

This is one of my favorite pictures from the day. Josiah was very interested in the fish. At one point, he wanted to touch them.

Speaking of Parks…

November 22nd, 2006 by Rachel

Josiah has a new favorite park activity–swinging!

DSC03339.JPG

He loves to swing and loves watching other kids swing, too. You can’t tell, but in the above photo, he’s kicking his legs and laughing with glee. His second favorite park activity is playing in the pebbles/rubber below the swings. You have to watch him closely. or pebbles might make it to his mouth.

Ah, Weekends

November 21st, 2006 by Rachel

We have had some wonderful weekends this month, full of visitors. Our guestbed was occupied for the past 3 weekends! This past weekend was an especially good one, full of friends, babies, and outdoor activities. Saturday, we went for a family jog around the neighborhood and later walked to a craft fair held at nearby school. That afternoon, we went to Josiah’s friend’s first birthday party (her parents are our friends also and were in our childbirth class–time flies), then went to a work party for Thomas, and then met another friend’s new baby. Later, Steven and Sharla came over and we talked until the wee hours. After church on Sunday, we tried out a new Mexican restaurant in town, bid Steven and Sharla farewell, and headed for our favorite family, good-weather, Sunday-afternoon, tradition.

This tradition started when I was pregnant. We’d go to this park and walk around until it was time for our childbirth class. Now that we have a jogging stroller, we take the boy with us too. You need big wheels to walk at this park. It’s off the beaten path and the paths have taken a beating from horses, bikes and flash floods.

I love going there where it’s so quiet you can hear animals (or birds) in the woods. It’s refreshing to get away from city noises and cement, to romp around on rocky paths, over creeks and enjoy the crisp, autumn air. Does anyone know, or want to guess, our favorite city park?

Rays of Sunshine

When I was a kid, I thought I had magic powers because I could see the sun’s rays from behind a cloud. I distinctly remember thinking this one day at Wet ‘n Wild as I was sitting in the shallow end of the wave pool. It was a sad day when I realized that other people could see them too.

Free Falling

November 17th, 2006 by Rachel

Josiah loves to stand up. He would stand up all day if he could just get himself upright without our help. However, he also thinks it is great fun to fall backward. He likes to do trust-falls. We did not teach him this, he just does it all the time. A few times he has done it while looking at me, knowing that I am not behind him, he just falls backward. It’s not that he can’t stand or doesn’t want to, he just falls. Like this:

I find it amazing how much trust he has in us that we won’t let him fall, except the few times that I wasn’t there (after the second time, he doesn’t stand unless one of us is behind him.) Some might say that he needs to learn to fall, but I disagree. I think his trust in us catching him is a beautiful thing that I’ve been reflecting on all week. The Bible says that God loves me like a father loves his children. Josiah’s trust-falling into our arms is a wonderful picture of how much I can trust my heavenly father implicitly. I pray that I do.

“Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” –Matthew 7:9-11
