Recommendations
After being “iced” in for several days and Thomas off work most of the week, we had a lot of time on our hands. We braved the weather and rented a few movies, only to find ourselves aimlessly wandering the aisles of our newly-renovated Hastings with a squirmy baby wanting to knock every DVD off the shelves. Most of the movie titles were unfamiliar to us, and prior mistakes have taught us not to rent anything in the new release category just because it looks good.
We’ve been enjoying the free movie rentals for so long from the BCS Library, and we have watched many great classics. Our favorites of late are Hitchcock movies, most recently viewing Lifeboat. We highly recommend it.
Anyway, all that said, we could use your help, dear blog reader, and we know that you are out there even though you don’t comment. Could you please comment and recommend a good movie or two to view? We don’t want anything too scandalous (i.e. language, unnecessary body parts, gratuitous violence, etc.) So comment away! New Releases, classics, whatever. Get busy!
hmm…
Good Night and Good Luck
School of Rock
Andrew Peterson’s Behold the Lamb of God DVD
Happy Feet (not yet released)
Memiors of a Geisha (if you’ve really got some time to kill… it’s long)
Tiny Tunes: How I Spent My Summer Vacation (for the kiddo)
Shawshank Redemption
Pride & Prejudice
The Nativity (probably not out on DVD yet)
How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days
Rebecca (my favorite Alfred Hitchcock movie)
The Robe (an old movie and a really good book, kinda of Ben Hurish)
We’ve also enjoyed renting 24 (the tv show) from the library, and I’ve enjoyed getting the Gilmore Girls from there as well. Prison Break is another favorite tv show of both of ours – but I don’t know that you can get the dvds from the library yet, as they are only on their 2nd season. But we both LOVE it – and it’s usually not that easy to find something we both LOVE!
We are big fans of the public library and interlibrary loan!
I’ve seen lifeboat. I will share my favorite Hitchcock movies:
‘Notorious’ (Ingrid Bergman is so hot)
‘Spellbound’ (again, Ingrid Bergman, also Gregory Peck, also a dream sequence designed by Salvador Dali)
‘Rear Window’ (one of the greatest of all time)
‘To Catch a Thief’
‘North by Northwest’ (also, one of the greatest of all time)
send some of that snow my way!
Over the break from the ice storm, we rented movies, too. Here are the ones we like:
Invincible – new release by Disney, actor – Mark Walberg Based on a true story of Vince Papale from NFL Philadelphia Eagles in the 70s. Not much on sports anymore such as football, but this is really good. G rated
She’s The Man – another sport movie – This one is about soccer and she dresses up like a guy to play since her school cut the girl’s soccer team.
Let me know if you rent and like these! We need to get together with the kiddos, soon.
Later,
Jess
Wow, you guys have a busy year ahead of you. I almost hate to make some suggestions. However…
Suspense
I will second Jerod’s “North by Northwest”, my favorite Hitchcock, and “Rear Window”, Aurelie’s. Another Suspense as good or probably better than most Hitchcock’s is Stanley Donen’s “Charade”, starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. What more could you want? Well, how about a young Walter Matthau and James Coburn.
Comedy
Bill Murray in “The Man How Knew Too Little”, the title plays off of Hitchcock’s “The Man Who Knew Too Much” with Jimmy Stewart, also good.
Western
“High Noon” with Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly was the first movie to have a plot that progressed in real time. And you can’t forget the Oscar winning song, “Do not forsake me oh my darling”, even if you wanted to.
Drama
“A Few Good Men” – Funny, smart, suspenseful
“Last of the Mohicans” – A beautiful movie with an amazing score
TV
Monk: Season’s 1 & 2 Brilliant Comedy about an obsessive-compulsive detective
West Wing: Seasons 1-7 Yes its a comitment but, It will make you want to run for office, or at least take voting seriously
Documentary
“Bonhoeffer” – Finally, a listed movie good for your faith
