Spring Break!

When you live in a college town, school holidays are some of the best parts of the year. You can drive down Texas Avenue all day long, you can go to Target in the middle of the afternoon on Sunday and get a parking place, and you can eat out without absurdly long waits. We are living it up this week! I think we might even try to eat at Cheddars on our date night this week.

Thomas has a few days off, and plans to work on painting the house in preparation for installing gutters soon. Hooray for flower beds that don’t get washed away in strong rains!

13 Months Update

March 7th, 2007 by Rachel

This month has been a month of growth in speech, signs and physical development. He is so much more aware of things around him. When we are driving, he spots big trucks, dump trucks, diggers, dogs and hats everywhere. I never realized until now how many people wear hats until recently. Josiah tells me about every hat he sees (and sometimes if he is just thinking about them) by saying “ha” (like hat but without the t) and patting his head which is the sign for hat.

His favorite place to be is outside. Often, while we are home and playing, he crawls to the door and starts saying “bye bye” and then whining to go outside. He can get quite dramatic about it with tears and everything. Thankfully, the weather has been beautiful and we go outside a lot. What do we do outside? We push a stroller up and down the sidewalk, walk around the yard picking up leaves and sticks, pull flowers off the plants when momma isn’t looking, stuff like that. Or we play at the park and push other people’s strollers and watch busses drive by.

Josiah’s speech and signing have exploded this month. Let’s see if I can remember all the words he says: bye bye, baby, ball (like baaa-baall), banana (ba-na), bubble, no (na na), Daddy, cracker (cacka), tractor (tackta), digger (di-di), truck (only I can understand that one), and ba ba for pacifier, and he says something for apple, but it’s another that only I can understand. He mimics a lot of things we say, but not very well. He now signs (thanks to Baby Signing Time): hat, dog, bus, sleep, airplane (sometimes), finished, eat, more, please, fish, and every once in a while, car. I might be forgetting something, but you get the idea. It’s a lot of fun how much he communicates these days. We look at books and he signs fish for every fish he sees, same for dogs, hats and tongues (yes, he will stick his tongue out like a dog or bear in his animal books). He also has a bird sound, “whoo whoo” like an owl, which he does when he sees birds, hears them, or if we drive into our garage and he sees the fake owl.

He also took his first steps on Monday! He is getting much better at balancing, and will take a step or two before falling to his knees if we let go of his fingers. He has also been eating more table foods, or at least sampling things, and eating more food in general. Josiah has started throwing tantrums lately. This is no fun for anyone as he arches his back and screams and cries when I am trying to put him in his car seat or stroller. I’m praying for wisdom on how to handle it, and on really tough days, it’s good to watch him sleep.

Spring Ramblings

After clearing out all the carrots from the garden, I blanched and froze them for later. Thomas built us two new garden beds, which we are using to try the square foot gardening method (hence the grid on the on bed–the wind was blowing really hard that day and they haven’t been nailed down yet). I got all the seeds planted yesterday, and we will begin hardening off our tomato plants soon. This is the before picture:

Hancock Fabrics in College Station is going out of business, so I stocked up on a lot really great material at discount prices. First, I am making some cloth napkins out of fabric that an acquaintance gave me that she didn’t plan to use. I ran out of thread, so Josiah and I will be making a trip to Walmart later for more and for prizes for my nutrition class I’m teaching at Hope. (Prizes are good incentives for keeping a food log and examining your diet). Josiah decided he is ready to only take one nap now, so we’re adjusting to a new routine.

All of our tulips and daffodils are blooming or have already bloomed. I’m so glad I planted so many–I love tulips! This is the backyard view, where most are blooming at the same time, the front yard, though prettier, has been more sporatic in their blooms.

One Man’s Trash

March 2nd, 2007 by Rachel

Thomas and I make no secret about our love of dumpster diving. I recently scored an awesome new toy to add to the living room clutter that our neighbors had haphazardly discarded on the curb. It’s a leaning play house! After a little hosing, scrubbing, and drying, it looks good and Josiah thinks it is great fun.

This same family discarded a broken dump truck a few months ago. I got that one to use as an outside toy, since it is a little more worn. What fun!

Next time I see the woman of the house, I might offer to take any unwanted toys off their hands, saving them the trip to the curb, but there isn’t nearly as much fun in that.
