Thanks Aunt Flo(nessa)

We busted out the monkey backpack/harness this weekend after a harrowing attempt at eating outside at Sonic. Josiah doesn’t really understand why he can’t go walking and exploring everywhere he wants, and we’re still trying to figure out how you discipline for things that are okay some places, but not okay in others. He just doesn’t quite get those difficult concepts yet.

Anyway, back to the backpack. Vanessa sent this backpack/harness as a baby gift shortly after we announced our pregnancy. If you were reading our blog back then, you might recall it. We decided to give it a try since he’s walking a lot now. We pulled it out of the box and explained it was a backpack by Thomas and I putting on our backpacks. He was excited now. He even started making his sound for monkey “eee eee” for the first time. On when the monkey backpack and, boy, was this kid excited! Little did he know why that monkey has such a long tail. He’s asked to wear it everyday since and gives the monkey hugs when he sees it lying around. Now, we just need to go somewhere and test it out in public…

If you check the original post about the backpack, you might notice some interesting comments. Several desperate mothers commented wondering where they could find a cute harness such as this one. We ended up going to our local Walmart, buying several and selling them on ebay, making a fine profit.

That’s my boy! He’s such a cutie! The backpack actually looks fun on him–Not a weird form of control. Glad to see the old money is put to some use! Love you guys!

oh no… the kid leash? I saw this at E-rock one time and I think a tear slipped out.

  3. Jessica says:

He is SO cute! I love to hear all the new words he is saying. My brother and I had “leashes” when we were young…I think we turned out okay?!

I’m sorry to disappoint you, D.O., but not really. If you were chasing this kid around all day, you’d probably consider a leash appropriate in dangerous (crowded, wilderness, etc.) situations also. We have yet to actually use it in public, so far it’s just a backpack that he loves to wear.

And I do think Jessica turned out okay as well as I did, who wore a kid leash a time or two as well.

I’m with D.O. on this one. Granted I don’t have any kids to know the fears and frustrations of chasing him or her around and Josiah does look very cute toting Curious George around with him but there is just something about kid leashes that weirds me out. Of course my parents didn’t use them and I’m not sure how well I turned out. . . .

    Hi Rachel!
This video was another hit with Ellie…I think we watched it 9 times in a row! She was mesmerized, and I think she was quite proud of Josiah talking so well (I know I was!)
Considering the fact that Ellie ran clear across Target the other day when I turned my head for one second, I am all for the kid leash. The only problem is, I’m pretty sure if we used one on her she would just scream and then we’d have to leave the store anyway.

  7. Annie says:

Oh good heavens, that is hilarious! I laughed out loud picturing Aurelie and Ellie watching the video and of course died laughing at the darling “eee eee” noises a “hat” makes, too! Well done, Rachel!

  8. Cute! I can’t wait to see the kid (and the parents too!). ~ Jon

    How cute!

My mother used one with my brother and it was so helpful.

I work with kids with disabilities at an elementary school in town and I have one slight caution for you.
One of our young students has been harnessed for some time.
When he is at school he is not harnessed and you absolutely cannot let go of his hand for one second. He is used to being restrained, and when allowed, will sprint (not run!) as fast as possible away from you.

    Josiah is soooo cute!
