Staph: My arch-nemesis

Sorry for no new posts lately, we had four days of grandparents coming to visit and then Sunday morning, we found out Josiah has a staph infection. It’s been a taxing two days (that’s it?!), and we would appreciate prayers for a speedy recovery for the boy. I hate seeing him in such pain. Read this to learn more about staph infections: MRSA Infections. Here’s the long version:

I noticed a bump near Josiah’s groin area on Friday night, but thought it was just a different type of diaper rash (though he rarely gets a rash)–it looked like a mosquito bite. It didn’t go away with A&D, so I put more on it Saturday night. On Sunday, it was much larger, red and hard feeling. I told myself that if it was still there on Monday, I’d call his doctor about it.

He was fine all morning and we went to church and put him in the nursery. About 30 minutes into the service, his number flashed on the screen so I went to check. He had been crying for a while and they couldn’t get him calmed down and no one could figure out what was wrong. I calmed him down, but remembered the weird bump so I showed the lady in charge of the nursery in the morning (she’s a family practice nurse practitioner at our doctor’s office). When she saw it, she said it was staph and that I needed to get him to the doctor ASAP. It scared me as I immediately thought of the “flesh eating bacteria” staph infections. I started crying, or trying not to, as I grabbed his bag and she called Urgent Care for us. (I hate that I always cry over stuff like this!) I ran and got Thomas and we were off.

We got to UC, were seen relatively quickly and the doctor was able to drain his abscess without having to lance it. Poor Josiah! And it’s in such a horrible area of his body! We started him on an oral antibiotic, have to rub prescription antibiotic cream in his nose everyday for a week (staph is carried there), clip his nails very often, give him baths with Clorox bleach in there to kill anymore bacteria on the skin, etc.

This morning, it was bigger and redder, streaking up higher than it did yesterday. We called the pediatrician who saw him Sunday and got in to see him. He had to numb the area, lance and drain the abscess, and pack it with gauze. All the while, we are holding him down along with a nurse and a med student. I was pretty worthless for crying so much and trying to calm Josiah down by talking to him.

He seems a little better now, he has a hard time walking and sitting since his wound is in such a tender area and rubbed each time he takes a step or rolls over. We go back in tomorrow (Tuesday) morning to remove the gauze and check to see if it is draining well or worsened. I’ll update if I get a chance tomorrow. Some good things about this: Josiah has been so cuddly and will rest on me for long periods of time; the doctor seeing him is wonderful; and Thomas was able to stay home from work Monday and help make sure I stayed fed, hydrated and rested.
