Getting Greener

Everywhere you look, green is in. It’s trendy to make less of an impact on the environment. While that is great, I think that as Christians, being more environmentally-conscious is an overflow of our faith. Christians should be the most radical environmentalists around–we worship the God who created this earth and we should worship Him by not filling it with trash and chemicals. Making less of an impact on the environment is considering others more important, those in the future and those living around the world. Part of ‘going green’ is also rejecting the throw-away consumer attitude that pervades our American culture. This opting out has rewards unto itself.

For us, simplifying things, living greener and consuming less have been rewarding experiences. We have made small changes over the course of our marriage, and since several friends and readers have asked to know more, I thought I’d address some topics in a series of posts. It will give me something to blog about (besides Josiah), and maybe encourage others to put more thought into the little things.

We are by far not the greenest people around, so we don’t claim to be. After all, we still drive a SUV! But we have learned some interesting things and want to share, so stay tuned for more Getting Greener posts.

I completely agree! I am so baffled when I hear my friends say “God will end the world in His time so there’s no reason for us to recycle.” Worst possible logic I’ve ever heard! He entrusted us as stewards of the earth, not so that we could trash it, but so that we could care for it. I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but this topic is important to me. DH and I both grew up in fairly green-conscious families and we want to really be better about it ourselves. I look forward to more posts about this!!!! :)

I really look forward to reading the upcoming posts - it is something that Greg and I have been talking about for a few months - we’ve slowly made a few changes, but definitely have more to make!

    Hey Rachel,

I subscribe to your blog, it’s fun to see your little guy grow up.

After your post on book reccomends, I borrowed Affluenza from the local library for fun reading on the trip I was on, thanks for the tip. Was so challenged and fascinated. I’m currently in seminary working on my MDiv and I’m taking an ethics class this summer for which I’m required to do a research paper on the topic of my choice. I decided to do it on The Ethics of Wealth and Affluence, in part because of the book! (and some other things that the Lord has been challenging me on). In fact, I’m speaking tonight at our campus ministry about the discipline of simplicity.

Anyway, just wanted to say that I am excited to read more on practical ways you guys are making choices to honor God by your lifestyle, thanks for writing! You’re an encouragement.

    Love to you!
