Nineteen Months Update

September 18th, 2007 by Rachel

Since it was brought to my attention that I hadn’t posted a Josiah update, I figured I had better hurry before I got too far behind. I use these little updates to fill in his baby books, and I don’t want to miss a month. Anyway, Josiah is doing well and so are we. I haven’t taken many pictures this month, and I apologize for the poor quality, but we had “professional” photos taken this month so I don’t feel bad about it.

Josiah is communicating all of the time, even in his own special terms. For instance, if you ask Josiah what color something is, it is always “geen” unless it is a car and then it is probably white. Diapers are called, “poo-poos”, please is no longer “ffff” but “feease”, and finished is “all gone”. He still refers to himself as “ya-ya” no matter how much I try to work with him on it. He is consistently putting together two words and sometimes three. Three words tend to be things like, “bye bye Daddy car” or “bye bye big dog”, etc.

Some kids like to line things up in neat rows, but Josiah is a stacker of objects. Toys, food, you name it, he stacks it. He did half of this one on his own:

I found some wooden blocks and we spend lots of time making “tall tow” (towers) such as this one:

Josiah will let them stay up for days and never knocks them down on purpose, unlike any other toddler who knocks them down as soon as they come in the room. We have had lots of friends and family visiting this month, affording Josiah many opportunities to practice sharing. For the longest time, he thought sharing meant that the object in question would be given to him. I realized this when he would yank toys from other kids while yelling, “shawer!” (share). He understands now that it may mean he gives the coveted item to a friend. Now, on the way to a friend’s house I will say, “Josiah, we are going to Dean’s house to play with Dean. You are going to share Dean’s toys with him and not take them from him,” and so on. For the rest of the drive he will say (translated), “Dean’s house. Share! (Fake cry.) Dean! Share! (Fake cry.)” It is really hilarious, and so is he. Here is is with his pal Jude who came to play a few weeks ago:

And lastly, a brief highlight video:

Kolache Festival

September 8th, 2007 by Rachel

Today was the annual Kolache Festival in downtown Caldwell, a small town about 30 minutes from here. I have wanted to go ever since I saw a sign about it my freshman year, seven years ago, and we finally made it this year. It was so much fun–Kolaches being sold right and left, folks in authentic Czech garb, polka bands, and vendors galore.

We waited in line for a while to purchase fried oreos or fried ice cream, we couldn’t decide. However, the line was excruciatingly long, and we only had $3 in cash left, so we opted for freshly squeezed lemonade instead. Someday, I WILL try a deep fried sweet thing, just to try it, but not a twinkie.

After waiting in line for a long time for kolaches from the big bakeries, we saw this table set up on a driveway on the outskirts of the festival.

This sweet, older woman was selling kolaches from a card table. When I asked her if she had baked them all herself, she answered, “Yes” and looked at me like that was the dumbest question in the world. We bought six.

There were quite a few older people there. This photo is funny because it is just one of four tables full of sweet grandmothers selling beer for $2.50 a can.

And one of the most enterprising things we saw today was the “train” ride for kids. For $3, your child (optionally accompanied by a parent) can ride in a train car (a plastic barrel cut into a seat), pulled by a riding lawnmower, with the mowing attachment removed. Pure genius.

Sewing Projects

September 2nd, 2007 by Rachel

I’ve been very busy lately doing lots of sewing. Since I haven’t had time for any other posts (I’ve been too busy sewing), I’ll leave you with a few pictures.

First, new wipes for Josiah. The old, single-layer flannel wipes have been used for over a year now and are getting a little thin. I bought some fun, race car flannel and lined the other side with terry, actually, an old towel. Voila! New, very-handy-at-cleaning-messy-bums wipes!

I’ve also made several Mei Tai carriers the past few weeks. I wish I had made one a year ago to use with Josiah. It’s handy for front or back carries, and very adjustable. Forgive me for the poor-quality self-portrait.

After seeing a friend with an amazingly similar pattern on her skirt, I dug through my old boxes and found a large piece of fabric I purchased in Nepal six years ago, and made a fun skirt for myself. I really like it, and I am so happy I found a fun way to use the fabric.

The rest I sewed last night, staying up too late. I made this skirt after seeing this cute material on sale this weekend. A little country, but cute.

Three nursing covers, and a shameless plug for my little business:

And I made a pouch sling also, but didn’t take a picture. Whew! It’s time to do something else for a few days.

Trains!

September 2nd, 2007 by Rachel

Josiah loves anything related to trains these days–playing with them, seeing them (thankfully there are many in this town), watching them, etc. I purchased a simple wooden train set several months ago with some gift money Josiah had received from a distant relative, and it had been taking up our entire coffee table for the last several weeks. Then, we got a free train/car track table from a lady in my mom’s group!

This is what it looked like when we got it. The other side of the top is a car race track, which we left in tact.

After a few coats of paint, this is what we have now:

And a very excited little boy (and a living room that looks like a daycare, but I guess that’s what it is!)
