Kolache Festival
Today was the annual Kolache Festival in downtown Caldwell, a small town about 30 minutes from here. I have wanted to go ever since I saw a sign about it my freshman year, seven years ago, and we finally made it this year. It was so much fun–Kolaches being sold right and left, folks in authentic Czech garb, polka bands, and vendors galore.

We waited in line for a while to purchase fried oreos or fried ice cream, we couldn’t decide. However, the line was excruciatingly long, and we only had $3 in cash left, so we opted for freshly squeezed lemonade instead. Someday, I WILL try a deep fried sweet thing, just to try it, but not a twinkie.
After waiting in line for a long time for kolaches from the big bakeries, we saw this table set up on a driveway on the outskirts of the festival.
This sweet, older woman was selling kolaches from a card table. When I asked her if she had baked them all herself, she answered, “Yes” and looked at me like that was the dumbest question in the world. We bought six.
There were quite a few older people there. This photo is funny because it is just one of four tables full of sweet grandmothers selling beer for $2.50 a can.
And one of the most enterprising things we saw today was the “train” ride for kids. For $3, your child (optionally accompanied by a parent) can ride in a train car (a plastic barrel cut into a seat), pulled by a riding lawnmower, with the mowing attachment removed. Pure genius.

That is hilarious about the grandmas selling beer. That picture is priceless. So did Josiah get to take a ride in the train? Man, I could really go for some hot homemade kolaches about now.

Looks like great fun!! I’ve also been wanting to go forever and thought this year would be the year, but no way I was braving it with two kids by myself!!

Yeah, that’s a good time. I went a few years ago. I’d have gone back this morning but I had a pretty important tennis match.

We’ve totally ridden that tractor pulling the barrel thingy (but it was in Brenham at the Bluebell festival).
