Riding Out the Storm

Thankfully, we haven’t had much action around here, unless you count building block towers and cleaning out closets.

Josiah has a new hobby - lining things up and sorting things. Toys, food, stickers, crayons, and such have all been sorted and arranged methodically of late. He used to enjoy lining up his cars, but now everything is lined up. Some examples as I walked through the house (I am often stumbling upon other discoveries–carrots on his dinner plate, crayons on the table, etc.):
You will notice that all of the “baby” animals are in another animal’s lap:

These animals are all sorted by type and arranged around the table.

There is a long line of cars here you can’t see, and the rest are stacked on blocks making “car transporters.”

I have only ever heard of one other kid doing this all the time, so is this “normal” or a sign of genius?
You should see the way his face brightens up when I pull out a stack of cards and suggest we line them up.
It’s really, really hot outside. Since I am in no place to take a newborn and toddler to the public pool, we have found some fun ways to cool off and socialize at the same time, thanks to our local municipalities.
Sometimes when we go to the splashpads, Josiah barely gets wet. Whatever. He takes the job of turning it back on when it turns off very, very seriously.

He gets all red-faced and sweaty when he gets hot, very much like me and very unlike his barely sweating, never red-faced father.

Here we are with quite a few of our friends one day–it looks like the moms are sorely outnumbered.

I’m thinking that He just might. Both of our kids have been born with them, a hairstyle of choice perhaps? Or maybe this is what I get for all the mullet-spotting Bethany and I did in college.
Josiah about a month old:

Annalise about a month old:

It’s amazing how little “free” time you have with a newborn who needs to be held most of the time! Here are some pictures from the past week, enjoy!
Annalise is a very alert baby when she is awake. She is awake for 45 minutes to an hour at a time, then must be bounced/rocked/swayed to sleep or she screams. Her favorite things are swaddling, nursing, being held and bouncing.

Josiah loves his sister. It’s precious to see how excited he is when she flails around and touches him or holds his hand. He is a great helper by getting pacifiers and burp cloths.

Happy Family

Josiah is keeping himself busy during nursing and bouncing sessions. Glue is his favorite this week, thanks to Grandma Mary’s gift of buttons and shiny stars.

One of Annalise’s favorite places

This update is a little late this week, things have been busy around here. Thomas got the bassinet and car seat out this weekend, and he finished cleaning out our last closets that needed organizing. We are just about as ready as we can be now. I haven’t washed all of our old newborn clothes yet, but we have a lot of basic onesies, pants and socks washed. I can’t bring myself to wash and fold all the newborn boy clothes, so if it’s a boy, someone will be busy.
My appointment with my midwife yesterday was uneventful. Baby’s head is down with only a slight wiggle in my pelvis, which is good. I’m carrying ridiculously low, which is a comment I hear almost everywhere I go, as if I didn’t feel it every time I sit down, or when my belly bangs into my legs when I walk up stairs. I’m experiencing a lot of Braxton-Hicks contractions, and have been for the past several weeks, but they are getting stronger and more noticeable these days, often making me stop what I am doing if I’m walking around or something. A lovely self-portrait from today, the angle is a little off, but you get the idea:

Josiah is just almost as excited as we are, which is so sweet. I hope the excitement lasts. A couple days ago, after his nap, I told him that I had a surprise for him. He looked up with such excitement, and asked, “Our baby came out?” It almost made me cry it was so sweet. We talk about Our Baby a lot, and it is really helpful that two of our good friends have had babies recently. We checked out the best book about having a new baby - “Hello Baby!” by Lizzy Rockwell. It’s the only book I’ve found that shows a mother nursing a baby, not the big brother/sister giving the baby a bottle, and other little tidbits like showing a baby with an umbilical cord stump are helpful, too.
Josiah is unwavering in his belief that this baby is a girl, though we try to prepare him often that it could just as well be a boy. Out of curiousity, I asked him last night what Our Baby’s name is going to be and he answered, very matter-of-fact, “Our Baby.” Of course. This little video shows off Josiah’s new, professional haircut after I managed to butcher it last week, and he shows a little of his knowledge about babies.
Last Friday was really, really hot for this big momma. I was trying to take some diapers off the line and thought I would melt right into the grass. Of course, Josiah wanted to play outside, and rather than go through a mutual meltdown, I drug out the house, stripped the boy down to his shorts, and he went to town (and I enjoyed getting wet too, just my legs, but somehow, my belly was soaked as well.)
(Sigh.) He looks so big to me these days.
